Title: Material 4 for ELA/SS in Middle Grades
Candace Powell
Name of Site: PBS Teachers
Link to Resources: http://www.pbs.org/teachers/media_lit/getting_started.html#lal
Teaching Topic of the materials: Media Literacy
Population of the students: 6th-8th Grades
How the materials would be used:
I would not use this actual SITE in a lesson plan but I would use the IDEAS from this site to incorporate in a Media Literacy Unit.
One of my favorite suggestions for activities on this site was to have students analyze music videos.
Why I would use this material with my students: This was probably my favorite website! It offered all these great ideas of how to incorporate media literacy in all the following concentration areas:
-the arts
-reading and language arts
-social studies
-math
-science and technology
-health and fitness
-early childhood
These activities would help my students in decision making when it comes to advertisements. It would also equip them with knowledge regarding how effective and impactful the media is on today’s society.
How the material would help my students learn the topic:
Incorporating a variety of these suggested activities are bound to broaden my students’ horizons on the effects of media as well as how media producers use different appeals to draw their audiences’ attention. Teachers have so many choices to pick from for how they want to teach media literacy to students.

This site lists a lot of good ideas to teach students. I think it’s important to find some new ideas so students are bored throughout the day. I also like how the site lists ideas for every content area.

Candace,
Add to these activities the actual materials that students would read, view, or listen to.

I think equipping our students with the tools for deciphering advertisements is a great idea. I’ll admit I’m a sucker for things in shiny packaging and pretty pictures regardless of the quality of the product so informing our students about advertising strategies will benefit them as consumers.

This is a great lesson CC. It is a great way to keep students engaged, and it is a great way of staying relevant.

I think this lesson is completely relevant and interesting for students! It will be engaging to multiple types of learners and will be fun. I love that you are using music videos, something students don’t usually associate with school in a manner that allows them to learn!
